Top iOS Games Powered by Unreal Engine

The Unreal Engine is a very powerful game engine developed by Epic Games, initially designed for first-person shooters. It has been proven successful in supporting a host of other genres, including stealth, MMORPGs, and action RPGs over the years. Now, more and more game developers opt for the Unreal Engine courtesy of its cutting-edge graphics technology, world-class toolset and high degree of portability.

The current version is Unreal Engine 3, which can be utilized on PC, PS 3, iOS, Android and multiple other platforms. Since the release of the Infinity Blade series, Unreal Engine 3 has become one of the premier solutions for iOS games and mobile apps. Popular hits include Injustice: Gods Among Us, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Man of Steel, Spiral, Bloodmasque and many more. We at AppsGoer compiled this top list, picking up some noteworthy games released in the recent years.  See more details in our introductions below.

Injustice: Gods Among Us

As a card-based fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us has been released on almost all major gaming platforms, including PC, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360, iOS and Android. Crafted by the NetherRealm Studios and published by WB Entertainment, the game allows you to collect and fight with almost all iconic characters from the DC Comics world. Next generation graphics, dazzling fighting combos, cross-platform functionality all add up the overall playability of the game.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

XCOM: Enemy Unknown has won critical acclaims on PC and console before it hits mobile devices. But that’s only one of the reasons the game can become a hit on the iOS platform. As with all other shooting games, XCOM: Enemy Unknown didn’t make much of a breakthrough on the controls, though it has done pretty well to cater to touch screen users. In view of the limit of touch screen devices, we really cannot blame XCOM too much for that. Instead, we should all be grateful for the chance it renders to play a great strategic shooting game on iOS.

2013 : Infected Wars

2013: Infected Wars is a newly released zombie shooter from Action Mobile Games. Though the theme is kind of tedious and old fashioned, 2013: Infected Wars has somehow managed to make itself fun to play, with amazingly immersive environments, an in-depth co-op multiplayer and single player campaign. Despite all the good points we have mentioned above, the game may fall apart for its high tag price and a stingy paywall, which will undoubtedly keep casual players out of its in-depth features.

Bloodmasque

What makes Square Enix’s RPG Bloodmasque really special, or maybe a little odd, is that it allows you to create a character which could actually be you. You can customize it using your images, your physical characteristics and your play style. You starts out as a half-vampire hunter to explore into the vast world to hunt vampires. But you are not alone in this fantasy world, as there are thousands of online players from around the world.

Spiral

Spiral, an Unreal Engine 3 powered ARPG from Pixel Hero Games, has released only the first part called Spiral Episode 1. Totally driven by an intriguing story, Spiral Episode 1 is amazing for its beautiful 3D graphics, rich explorable environments and intense real-time combat. If you are looking for an tradition action RPG with stunning visuals, Spiral Episode 1 is a not-bad choice. And keep in mind that we have even more episodes to expect.

Man of Steel HD

Nowadays, more and more movies are having a tie-in game, with the intention of whetting our appetites before their official releases or boosting the films’ notability and overall box record after the releases. With a cast of characters and scenes from the film, the game Man of Steel HD did a magnificent job alluring us to buy a ticket for the film.  The 3D visuals, the fighting actions and  the friendly controls, are all top-notch. It just that the never-end nagging for IAP may keep many players away for deeper engagement.

World War Z

World War Z is another movie-tie game, coming as a mix of zombie shooter and action RPG. The game is set in the same world as what the movie will offer, but it didn’t reveal any major plots that the movies was going to unfold. You just follow the story and explore into the world, raveling puzzles and shooting down waves of oncoming zombies. Despite the  cliche zombie shooting part, the game is actually more addictive due to its super absorbing storyline. You won’t want to drop it until you get all mysteries unveiled.

Infinity Blade

The first version of the Infinity Blade series, released on December 9, 2010, is the very first iOS game to run on the Unreal Engine 3. In the game, the player fights an array of 1v1 battles as their character venture through a derelict castle in a fantasy world in order to fight the God King at last. Players swipe on the screen to attack and parry, as well as dodge and block enemy attacks. The fast growing download record gives infinite confidence to its developers, leading to the release of Infinity Blade 2 in 2011. A third installment of the game called Infinity Blade Dungeons was even announced at early 2012, but has since been cancelled.

Bounty Arms

Bounty Arms had undergone a test run on the CA App Store bofore it launched worldwide, and it worked satisfactory. Bounty Arms boasts high quality visuals, touch-tailored controls and robust shooting actions. It puts you in the shoes of one of three adorable protagonists–an alien, robot, or roughneck–as you blast your way through a number of bounty missions. The game is fun to play, but the lack of depth may deter itself from becoming a mega hit.

Wild Blood

Gameloft has released tons of games, none of them being claimed for not “splendid” in graphics. Wild Blood, powered by the cutting-edge Unreal Engine, is a good example, bringing the most unbelievable battles in real-time and full 3D graphics. Play as the legendary and brutal Sir Lancelot to fight off the legions of Hell and challenge the mighty King Arthur, who has been enchanted by Morgana. A juicy and colorful adventure awaits.
