Sorceress of Fortune, the sequel to 2010 released Sorcerer of Fortune, marks the 5th story of the Fortune Chronicle Episode by Dotomchi. It’s a RPG title infused with match-3 puzzles. Sounds pretty much like typical puzzle RPGs like Puzzle & Dragons and Battle Camp? As a matter of fact, it’s much different from those, as it also includes typical RPG elements like character upgrading, equipment looting, etc.

There are three adorable female characters to choose from upon your start. Each character has a background story and a total of 8 elemental sorcery skills (fire, ice, wind, lightening, poison, healing, earthquake, and meteor strike). The sorcery skill corresponding to the shattered jewelry’s element will be activated when it comes to battle.
After selecting your role out of three playable characters, the game throws you directly into a battle, which progresses in the popular 3 match puzzle game format where players take turns to attack each other. The damage you inflict on opponents each turn is determined by how many 3 or more of the same jewels you can match in one move. When the HP of one side drops to zero, the opposing side wins. Each win in battle will reward you experience and items that you would allow you to equip your character from head to feet.
Combat skills can be done once the Skill Point reaches 10 or more and the 3, 4, 5 hit combos can be customized as more points are accumulated. The customized number of combo hits will be automatically activated in battle.
The spotlight of the game may lie in its multiplayer online competition, where two real-world players can partake in a one-one combat. But if you don’t have a friend playing with you and have to ask the auto-matching system to find one for you, you will be astonished by how desperately long that process could take. And for me, I just gave it up.
To be honest, the match-3 part is not as much fun as any pure match-3 game like Candy Crush Saga, Farm Heroes Saga and so on. The role-playing part is somewhat better. But it gets old pretty fast. Even if you can loot highly-desirable equipment, you don’t get excited much, as you know that is pretty much all there is to expect.

Noticeable improvements on visual and sound effects have been made. And that’s something players are always pleasant to see, but at the end of the day, Sorceress of Fortune is nothing but a copy of Sorcerer of Fortune. If you enjoyed the previous Sorcerer of Fortune, you may also have fun in the new sequel. But if you want to find something new and refreshing, just ignore it.
