First Look: ACR Drift - With Similar Format to CSR Racing and FF6

If you are familiar with car racing games on the iOS platform, you won’t be alien to Fast and Furious 6 and CSR Racing. The two games have been performing well in both grossing chart and free chart in the App Store for a decent period of time in 2013. Today a game called ACR Drift that closely resembles FF6 and CSR has launched by Eutechnyx and Crooz. Below is our first look hands-on impression.

Like FF6 and CSR Racing, ACR Drift is not the arcade-style racers that are based on tilt controls. All these three challenge you to do best timing to launch, drift, nitro, and etc. On the other hand, ACR Drift may draw a little bit from both games, and its controls are more simple and user-friendly.

The first thing to start a race is to make a perfect launch, which may gain you an upper hand at the beginning. And during each race, there are several curves for you to drift through. Unlike in FF6 where you need to hold a drift button until the curve ends, a simple left/right swipe will do the job in ACR Drift. The real challenge lies in how to perform a perfect drift through a precise timing. Here I’d like mention that there isn’t even a drift option in CSR Racing.

What makes ACR Drift seem simpler than FF6 and CSR Racing is that it does not ask you to shift, which also requires perfect timing for sure. Nearly every race can be completed within 40 seconds. So usually you don’t feel much pressure before it suddenly comes to an end.

A car racing game cannot go without car upgrading and new car unlocking. ACR Drift includes over 50 authentic cars, and 6 types of car upgrades to better their performances. And that’s pretty much all you might ask for as the racing becomes repetitive and tedious. One thing to heat your up - an option for multiplayer online races. But the function is not open yet. Developers promise to unlock that feature in the next update. We’ll keep an eye on it.

Though personally I like arcade racing games such as Asphalt and Real Racing better, I have to admit games like ACR Drift has its share of playability. However, I can almost tell that it won’t make a hit like what FF6 and CSR have done. During the course of playing about 30 minutes, it crashed two or three times. And then all of a sudden, I could not log on again due to a flash-out problem. All right, maybe let’s call it a day.
