XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review

Earth is being invaded by aliens on a global scale. The Council of Nations has created an elite paramilitary group to defend humanity and you are given the charge to become the commander of this group. You are responsible for some of the best soldiers, scientists, and engineers from nations all over the world. You make the tough decisions and play a huge role in what the future is going to look like. That’s right, baby — this is XCOM, and it’s available for your iOS device right now. Read More…

Deus Ex: The Fall Review

It’s an exciting time in iOS gaming. The hardware is powerful enough to run some truly impressive games and the App Store’s sales are strong enough that big-name studios are taking notice. Companies like EA, Sega, and Square Enix have been pumping stuff onto the App Store for years, but it’s been more recently that we’re seeing triple-A titles hit the platform. Last month saw an awesome port of XCOM and this week we got an original triple-A title from Square Enix, Deus Ex: The Fall. Read More…

Zombie Killer Squad Review - Run and Gun

Zombie Killer Squad is a hybrid of endless running and zombie shooting. By that description alone (and its super generic name), you might expect it to be a completely clichéd experience. The thing is, the game hit just yesterday and already it has skyrocketed to the #2 position on the Top Charts for free apps. There must be something more to it, right? As it turns out, the game was created in part by two major gaming YouTubers, Seananners and Syndicate. That gives Zombie Killer Squad a huge audience to market to and a fanbase that’s eager to support it. Read More…

First Look - Thor: The Dark World - Beat ’em Up with the God of Thunder

So I’ve spent the past hour with Gameloft’s latest — Thor: The Dark World. It ties in directly with the Marvel movie of the same name that’s due to hit theaters in just over a week. I’ll try to keep my mentions of the plot to a bare minimum, because I have a sneaking suspicion that the game’s plot closely follows that of the movie. This article shouldn’t spoil anything beyond the first five minutes of the game and movie, but if you’re somebody who really hates spoilers, you’ve been warned!

Pet Alliance Review

Despite the clamoring of its fans, Nintendo still hasn’t graced Android or iOS with a real Pokémon game. Let’s face it, fellow Pokénerds — it will probably never happen. That void causes tons of developers to take a shot at making their own twist on the series. Nobody’s ever come very close to capturing the entire magic of Pokémon, but some have captured portions of the formula with resounding success (Puzzle & Dragons comes to mind). Egame Company has recently released their take on monster collecting, Pet Alliance, for Android, iOS, and Facebook.

Dungeon Keeper Review - Draws inspiration from Clash of Clans, yet with a Quirky Sense of Humor

In 1997, Peter Molyneux (of Populous and Fable fame) left EA to form Lionhead Studios. His last project at EA was Dungeon Keeper, a strategy game where players take on the role of an evil overlord managing a dungeon full of traps and minions. Despite the popularity and cult status that Dungeon Keeper has attained, its most recent game is 1999’s Dungeon Keeper 2. That is, until now. EA has rebooted the franchise with a new mobile game that’s simply called “Dungeon Keeper”.

D&D: Arena of War Review - the Sundering Plagued by Pay-to-Win

Wizards of the Coast has teamed up with mobile development powerhouse Mobage to release the first free-to-play, mobile Dungeons & Dragons game. The game is available for both Android and iOS. D&D: Arena of War takes place in perhaps the most popular D&D setting, the Forgotten Realms (Baldur’s Gate is also set in the Forgotten Realms). Wizards of the Coast is currently running an event called “the Sundering” which will reshape the Forgotten Realms with input from players. The Sundering can be experienced through the tabletop game, novels, accessories, and this mobile game, Arena of War.

CSR Classics Review - Like the Original, But Still Fun

Last year, Boss Alien teamed up with NaturalMotion to bring CSR Racing to iOS. Players loved collecting, upgrading, and racing cars with awesome graphics and no price tag. The game’s success makes it no surprise that a new game in the series, CSR Classics, has just hit the App Store. This time around, all the licensed cars are classic models and it’s up to you to collect rusty old beaters, restore them to their former glory, and then soup them up to become the best street racing vehicles in the city.

Excalibur: Knights of the King Review - Side-scrolling Beat ’em up Set in Medieval Britain

Reality Squared Games is the team behind a bunch of free-to-play browser-based games. With few exceptions, their games are fantasy-themed MMORPGs. Their latest game, Excalibur: Knights of the King, marks their entry into the Android and iOS markets. It, too, is a fantasy-themed MMORPG. Interestingly, it also takes inspiration from classic Beat ’em ups for its combat system.

Shadowslayer: Dawn of the Lightforge Review - Interesting Blend of Action RPG and Base Builder

Shadowslayer: Dawn of the Lightforge is an interesting blend of action RPG and free-to-play base-builder. In a sense, it’s very much like Bastion — both mechanically and thematically.

You play a lone warrior who is battling through stages full of enemies, especially some black, demonic ones called the Corrupted. As you defeat monsters and explore stages, you’ll amass gold and materials that you can use to construct buildings. What begins as a tiny collection of buildings surrounding a protective obelisk soon blossoms into a small village that gets named “Haven”. As the village expands, its population will too. In return for supporting Haven with your time and resources, the people and buildings of Haven will support you by generating resources, assigning missions, and letting you craft gear.
