Apoc Wars Review

Apoc Wars is a new real-time strategy game developed by Gloops Games and published by Mobage.

The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all resources are scarce, and people need to scramble to get a piece of what is left. Your goal in the game is to build a base where you can produce your own resources, and grow a powerful army to defend what is yours and seize everything else.

There are two types of resources in the world of Apoc Wars: Scraps and Oil, and all building and upgrading need to consume resources and power. Power is generated by the most important building, your command center, while resources are gained by building scrap factories and oil derricks. Everything gets better after being upgraded, but be aware, buildings in the process of upgrading will stop production.

From the Build menu, you will find many items that can be put in your base, among which the barracks and recon facilities play a critical role in warfare. You can train various combat units in barrack and produce spy vehicles in recon facility. With walls and turrets set up, you could even enhance your city.

When you are properly armed, you can initiate attacks on the enemies’ bases. Do to others before they do to you. There are two battle modes: Matches and the Hit List. In Matches, you will be battling against AI enemies. Whenever you reach a new level, you will always find in the match list a couple of new AI enemies whose base you can raid.

An enemy’s base is always hidden in the smog of war, thus the first thing to do is send out spy vehicles to clear away the smog and reveal the base. They can only be deployed one unit at a time, and can only be placed at the margin of the enemy’s base. Then you will be navigating it to approach the enemy’s base and trying to locate the command center. When a vehicle is within the shooting range of the enemy’s turrets, it will be attacked and probably destroyed. If that happens, you will have to return to the starting point and deploy a new spy.

When you can get a clear view, you can deploy the troops. You have to first select the units you want to spend in this battle, and tap on the ground to deploy them. Think twice before making the decision though, as mid-combat reinforcement is not an option. After a combat begins, you can tap on the ground to move your troops and tap on a building to attack it. Victory can only be achieved upon the destruction of the enemy’s command center.

For every building you manage to destroy, you will get extra rewards, but the combat will end right after you blow up the command center regardless of the total damage you’ve caused. If you win a combat, you will get EXPs and resources as rewards. You will also earn yourself a chance to loot for one item, which can be used to equip your command center. However, if you lost in a combat, you will get nothing.

Another way to choose your opponents is from the Hit List. This multiplayer battle mode is only available for those who are in an alliance. For a beginner, you can either find other loners from the alliance list and invite them to form an alliance with you, or you can see if there are any invitation for you to take and join an already existed alliance. With an alliance, you will have the purpose and targets to go to more battles.

Speaking of monetization, the in-game currency in Apoc Wars is called Blood Money, which can be used to speed up building and training progress, and to get more resource refills.

Apoc Wars has made some improvements based on the standard RTS game formula. You have more options to command your troops to target a specific building in combat, and you can have them switch targets anytime you like. Moreover, you can still do construction works and move buildings around in your base even after you are offline, and those units that are not destroyed in combat can be re-used in the next battle, which differ much from Clash of Clans. Such game features could really save the player time and resources, and add to high playability.
