Injustice: Gods Among Us is a fighting game that has been released on almost all major gaming platforms, including PC, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360, and mobile devices. This grand production was crafted by the reputable game developer NetherRealm Studios and published by WB Entertainment. A mobile version that’s specially customized for iOS devices has been available on the App Store since early April.
Action game enthusiasts and DC Comics fans alike will appreciate it, as this game stars DC’s greatest superheroes and its equally iconic supervillains, and pits them against each other in battles. Set in an alternative universe, the good will no longer necessarily be rivaling against the evil, and heroes and villains might appear on the same side.
Each player will initially have three characters available to use. The single-player campaign mode in the game carries on in the form of team battles. Each team will have three characters that will take turns to enter the arena and engage in one-on-one combat with a member of the opposing team.
For a fighting game on touchscreen devices, the controls are surprisingly easy to use. The most commonly implemented touchscreen controls are taps and swipes. In this case, tapping on the screen is to strike the opponent and swiping horizontally is to strike heavier. After charging enough power during one fight, a character can use a super move. Tapping or swiping rapidly as instructed will cause extra damage or a knockout. Victory is achieved by knocking out all three members of the opposing team.Winning a battle will be rewarded with EXP and coins. A character becomes more powerful after leveling up and more of their unique skills will be unlocked.
The best feature found in this game is that the gameplay combines card collecting with fighting. New character cards can be acquired through leveling up or can be purchased from the store. Between battles, you can reform your team with alternative characters or upgrade the characters’ unique skills with coins.
The visual performance in Injustice is just stunning. NetherRealm Studios has done an excellent job bringing console-quality graphics to iOS. Injustice features detailed 2D graphics for the cards and menus, but 3D character models are used in fight scenes. Its movie-like visual quality is a feast for the eyes.
Injustice: Gods Among Us is monetized through the selling of coins. The game has one of the most amazing built-in shops, where players will find a wide range of DC characters that can be purchased with coins to be customized and arranged into the most celebrated and indomitable battle team. Booster packs and support cards (sidekicks and notable items from the DC world) are also available in the shop. Since shopping in this game is so fun, it’s easy to see why its monetization scheme has been so successful.
Much to the disappointment of players, the iOS version of the game does not have a multiplayer mode. Also, the single-player mode is not nearly as epic as it is in the console version which features an original and exciting plot line. It’s normal for mobile versions of console games to be dumbed down though. Injustice: Gods Among Us is a great mobile implementation of a great game and should definitely not be missed by DC fans.
